Chapter Fifteen

“It’ll suffice,” said the older voice, in reply to Goofy’s question.

I was lying on my belly now, inching back towards the skylight. I felt the rough surface of the roof through my thin shirt. Something about that voice sounded familiar as well. Finally reaching a point where I could just see down into the classroom, I caught the flicker of a torch inside. It was nearly full dark now, and I reasoned that with the light inside and the dark sky overhead, I’d have a decent chance of looking in whilst remaining unobserved. I saw Goofy place a torch on one of the tables and had to suppress a gasp of surprise when the torchlight fell on the face of the man that he was talking to.

I waved at Monkey, still lying on his back, and managed to attract his attention. I stabbed my finger down towards the classroom, and he peered through the skylight from his prone position. He looked shocked all over again. “Charles Gooch as well!”

“Definitely bad juju,” I whispered. The voices of Goofy and Gooch murmured on, not giving any indication that they had been seen.

“So, have you managed to secure the coin?” asked Gooch.

“Do you not read the papers?” asked Goofy. “It’s back with its owner.”

“But you promised that you could retrieve it,” said Gooch, his voice betraying an edge of anger.

“Look, I know somebody. Somebody that I trust,” said Goofy, attempting to appease Gooch. “This guy, he says that there’s no way we’re getting in that house. There’s a million-pound security system.” Goofy sounded a bit smug for somebody delivering bad news.

“So, what you’re telling me is that you have failed in the task that I set you,” Charles Gooch said in a condescending tone.

“Look, I said I could get it off that kid, okay… I was wrong, I admit, but this mansion that Hawkstone lives in - it’s way above my talents, mister.”

Gooch seemed to consider this for some time, playing with the edge of the desk where it had splintered away, his gloved hand crushing the rotten wood. I glanced across at Monkey to see if he was taking all of this in. “It must have been Gooch who told Goofy about us having the coin,” I hissed. Monkey nodded back furiously, putting his finger to his lips, scared that we’d be heard.

“At least you have a realistic understanding of your limitations,” said Gooch. “No matter. What about the other items that we discussed?”

“Tuggy?” said Goofy. For the first time, I saw the top of Tuggy’s ginger head come into view. He offered a small bag of items out to Goofy.

“Not me. Him!” Goofy responded, indicating that Tuggy should pass whatever he was holding to Gooch. Gooch took the bag and emptied the contents into his gloved hand, whilst Goofy looked on apprehensively. From our position, I couldn’t see what he was holding, but the look on Gooch’s face said enough. He flung the contents angrily across the room, producing a sound like several small pebbles scattering across a tiled floor.
